The Freelancer Diaries
A week in the life
Being a freelancer has its upsides: you get to make your own schedule and you can be selective about the work you take on. On the other hand, every day is a war with yourself. You’re your own boss, and playing the dual role of boss/employee involves having discipline and exercising self-control, which isn’t easy. The following is a meticulous account of how this week shook out:
Monday: Wrote a to-do list, went to the organic supermarket, and played several hours of Rock Band 3
I fucked Monday up, setting a bad precedent for the rest of the week. I wrote a list of everything I needed to accomplish before Saturday, drove to my local Sprouts to pick up some coffee and salmon, and basically called it a day.
It was a total blur. It’s Friday now and I barely remember what happened. The only thing I’m certain I did was play several hours of Rock Band 3, the video game I’m currently addicted to. I went on “tour” with my “band,” which is me and two custom NPCs I designed to look like The Joker and Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad (2016). I had a great time, holding the Wii guitar tightly, pressing buttons and strumming along, not blinking enough.
